12th Annual
East Coast Wahine Championships
Wrightsville Beach Beach, NC (July 11, 2008) —
Southeastern North Carolina is gearing up for the largest
women’s surfing contest on the right coast- the
East Coast Wahine Championships. Held every August in
Wrightsville Beach, the ECWC encourages female surfers
of all ages and abilities to join in the fun. Nearly
200 wahines will travel from Maine to Puerto Rico bringing
friends and family for a weekend of camaraderie and
competition.
This year, the ECWC will host an Open Shortboard division
for surfers to test their skills in an all-ages category.
Other age-based divisions include shortboard, longboard,
bodyboard, and novice for first time competitors, as
well as a 10 and under division where parents may assist
their children in the water. Entry forms for the 12th
annual ECWC are available on-line, www.eastcoastwahines.com
The East Coast Wahine Championships was the first all
female amateur surfing contest on the east coast. The
event began in 1997 as a tribute to a late friend and
as a way to give women the spotlight in the surf. The
event has since grown steadily receiving national coverage.
The ECWC was most recently mentioned in the book Surfing,
Women of the Waves, by Linda Chase.
The ECWC is proud to announce Billabong as its presenting
sponsor. Billabong produces active lifestyle, fashion-forward
clothing, accessories and related products designed
and distributed to a worldwide customer base. The products
are developed in the authentic environment of the surf
culture and sold primarily through surf and specialty
retail boutiques. Billabong sponsors the world’s
best female surfers, snowboarders and skateboarders,
and is committed to supporting the progression of women’s
